Abstract
1454423 Shaft seals CRANE PACKING Ltd 9 May 1975 [4 May 1974] 19709/74 Heading F2B In a face seal which is cooled by the heat pipe principle, a sealed cavity 63, which is partially filled with volatile liquid, is provided in the rotary component 61 of the seal and is formed with a conical periphery, so inclined that centrifugal force maintains the liquid at the end adjacent the rubbing face. The rotary component may be axially fixed (Figs. 1-5, not shown) or may be urged by springs 64 and a wedge seal 67 towards an axially fixed stationary seal component 60. The rotary component may have fins for atmospheric cooling or in the case of a rotary pump (Fig. 2) the pumped liquid circulates around the component.
