Abstract

885,053. Piston and stuffing-box packing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 12, 1960 [Oct. 14, 1959], No. 34826/59. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). In a packing comprising a flexible sealing ring 1 having an annular groove 6 in one end forming lips 7, 8 pressed apart to effect sealing by a header ring 2, the header ring comprises two concentric portions 9, 10 axially movable relative to each other and each urged independently of the other into engagement with one of the lips of the sealing ring. The packing is shown applied to each piston 4 of a double-acting hydraulic piston assembly, both header ring portions 9, 10 being urged against the ring 1 by a nut 18 threaded on the piston rod 20 and acting via a ring 19, directly on the portion 9 and indirectly on the portion 10 through springs 14 mounted on pins 12. The portion 10 has axial holes (not shown) therein to admit sealed pressure fluid to the groove 6. The ring 1 may be of polytetrafluoroethylene. In an alternative construction both portions 9, 10 are spring urged against the sealing ring 1. The invention may be applied to a rotating shaft.
