Abstract
1283867 Rotary shaft seals TRIST MOULDINGS & SEALS Ltd 21 June 1971 [4 Aug 1970] 37660/70 Heading F2B In a rotary shaft seal comprising a sealing ring 3 mounted on the shaft 2 for rotation therewith and a non-rotary sealing ring 10 mounted on a sleeve 12 slidably sealed in the shaft housing 15 and urged axially by helical springs 21 to press the ring 10 into sealing contact with a conical face 4 on the ring 3, the springs are located on the housing by their ends engaging means, e.g. spigots 28, on a locating ring 26 fixed as by bolts 27 to an end face 22 of the housing. The ring 10 is clamped by bolts 14 between a loose flange 13 and a flange 11 on the sleeve 12 which is sealed to the housing by an O-ring 17. The springs 21 are each housed in a lug 19 on the sleeve and adjustably compressed between the ring 26 and an abutment plate 23 on a stud 24 threaded in the flange 13. Rotation of the sleeve is prevented by one of the lugs 19 engaging between two axial projections 29 on the locating ring 26. The ring 3 is sealed to the shaft by a rubber O-ring 6 and driven therefrom by a pin 8 on a collar 1 clamped on the shaft. The ring 3 is split and of ceramic material and the ring 4 may be of graphite in a bronze matrix.
