A spin drier 1 comprises a lid 9 having a lever 14 extending beyond its pivot 10 which engages below an arm 21a of a bell-crank pivotally mounted lever which is connected through a Bowden cable 24 to one arm 26a of a two-armed lever 26 secured to the housing of the drier motor 3, which lever controls both a motor switch 29 and a brake shoe 32. The lever 26 is biased by a spring 28 so that the brake shoe 32 thereon is urged into contact with a brake shoe disc 30 on the motor shaft 6, when the lid is open. Closure of the lid moves the lever 14 to lift the lever 21 to tension the Bowden cable and so draw the lever 26 against the action of the spring 28 from the brake disc 30 and move lever arm 26b to close the switch 29. A set-screw 31 on the arm 36b enables the sequence of operation of the brake and switch to be set, and the Bowden cable passes through a tube 25 to protect it against moisture.
