[Also in Division D1] Apparatus whereby the tension in a running yarn or filament is automatically maintained constant comprises a sensing means which, in response to change in tension in a loop of the yarn formed between two pulling rollers, produces error-signals which actuate a differential, through which the drives for the rollers are interconnected, to adjust correctively the speed of the first roller in the direction of advance of the yarn. As shown in Fig. 1, a selsyn motor 16 drives a pulling roller 28 to feed yarn 24 from a spool 26. Yarn passes around a weighted, free pulley 34 and idler 38 to form a loop 39 and is then advanced by a pulling roller 40 driven at a preselected constant peripheral speed (normally equal to the peripheral speed of roller 28) by a variable speed motor 42 and itself driving a selsyn generator 12 which drives the motor 16. Movement of pulley 34, in response to change in the length of loop 39 due to variation in yarn tension, through a link 46 moves the rotor of a differential transformer 18 which transmits a corresponding signal, modified by an amplifier 20, to a servo-motor 22 which actuates a selsyn transformer 14 to adjust the speed of the motor 16. In a modification, Fig. 2, rollers 40 and 28 are driven by a motor 50 (the speed of which is maintained constant by a controller 59 operated by a tachometer 58) directly through gears 51, 52, and, through a differential 55, via gears 65, 66, 53, 54. Change in the length of loop 39 moves link 46 to cause transformer 18 to generate a signal which is fed, via amplifier 20, to motor 22 which then rotates shaft 63 to rotate a gear 61 and thereby correctively adjust the speed of roller 28.
