Abstract

954,321. Locomotives. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Jan. 11, 1963 [Jan. 18, 1962], No. 1845/62. Heading B7L. A railway locomotive is powered by a spark ignition internal combustion engine, the fuel for which is methane, propane, butane, coal gas or other gas which may be stored under compression in bottles or which may be liquefied, the liquefied gas being passed to a vaporizer and thence to the carburetter of the engine. As shown in Fig. 1, a supply of methane is stored in bottles 18 connected to a common manifold 19 connected to a supply pipe 20 having a stop valve 21 and leading to a combined filter and reducing valve 22 followed by a high pressure regulator 23 which is joined by a pipe 24 to a non-return valve 25, the circuit to the engine also including a reducing valve and filter 27, a low pressure regulator 28, an electromagnetic shut off device 30, a flame arrester 31, a gas regulator 32 and a carburetter 12. An emergency source of gas is also connected to the circuit through a stop valve, a non-return valve and the pipe 40. The carburetter throttle valve 13 is operated from a control 15 through a linkage 14 and from a governor 16 through a linkage 17. As shown in Fig. 4, liquefied propane is stored in bottles 58 connected to a manifold 59 connected to the engine carburetter 52 through a pipe 60 which has connected therein a non- return valve 61, a filter 62, a safety relief valve 63, a flame arrester 64, an electro-mechanical shut off device 65, flame arrester 66, and vapor. izer 71. The vaporizer 71 is a heat exchanger having a water pipe 74 connected in parallel with the radiator in the engine cooling system, and includes a non-return valve 80 which ensures that the gas passing through is above a predetermined pressure.
