Apparatus for assisting the starting of internal combustion engines of the liquid fuel injection compression ignition type comprises an auxiliary fuel delivery device disposed or formed for disposal for delivery of auxiliary fuel at a point in the air induction system 1 of the engine, a heating device 4 capable of heating or heating and igniting fuel delivered by the auxiliary fuel delivery device, supply passages connected or arranged for connection respectively to a source of normal fuel 6 as used in the injection device or devices of the engine and to a source of special starting fuel 7 of lower ignition temperature and change over valve apparatus 8 by which fuel can be caused to be delivered to the auxiliary fuel delivery device at will from either of the supply passages. The heating device may be automatically controlled so that it will operate at a higher temperature when the normal fuel is being delivered to the auxiliary fuel delivery device than when the special fuel is being delivered to this device or the heating device may not be operated when the special fuel is being used. Separate nozzles may be provided for the normal fuel and the special fuel.
