Abstract

881,210. Fuel supply systems. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Aug. 18, 1960 [Aug. 8, 1959], No. 28619/60. Class 7(3). A fuel feed system for a vehicle internalcombustion engine installation comprising a main engine 11 driving the vehicle and an auxiliary engine 15 driving auxiliaries, such as a generator, comprises a fuel tank 14 with a supply pipe system which feeds both engines simultaneously through connections 22, 24, and permits the auxiliary engine 15 to be fed separately through a by-pass U; excess fuel delivered to the engines is returned to tank 14 through a return flow pipe and each of the engines has only two connections with the feed supply pipe system, namely an admission connection 22, 24, with the supply side of the system and an overflow discharge connection 23, 25, with the return flow pipe. The two engines are supplied from tank 14 by a pump 13 driven by an electric motor 12 which also drives a pump 21 which feeds fuel from a tank 17 or 18 to the tank 14 to ensure that tank 14 is always full, the overflow being delivered through a two-way cock 19 either to tank 17 or 18. The tanks 17, 18 are in parallel and cocks 19, 20 control which tank is operative. The auxiliary engine which is started by compressed air includes an engine driven feed pump 26 which, during starting, draws fuel through the by-pass U containing a non-return valve 16 which closes when pressure is developed in the main fuel system by the pump 13. The auxiliary engine drives a generator which supplies power for the electric motor 12 and for an electric starting motor for the main engine.
