Abstract

952,941. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Sept. 18, 1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 33345/61. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G3] The worm and worm-wheel driven screwdown of a rolling mill is driven, independently of the normal rotation of the worms, by an hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement which moves a worm axially. The conventional drive to a screw 16 is from a motor 31 which drives through pinions 29 and 27, a worm 25, and a worm-wheel 23. The drive to the other screw 17 is similar, the two motors 31 and 32 being interconnected by a clutch 33. In operation, however, the pass is rapidly and accurately adjusted by an hydraulic pistoncylinder arrangement 43 in response to variations from a standard in the thickness of the rolled material, as measured by an X-ray gauge. In order to keep the piston of the arrangement 43 centrally positioned and therefore ready for movement in either direction, the worms are rotated by the motors 31 and 32, in response to a signal from a position transmitter 62, in coordination with their axial motion. The position transmitter is driven from a pinion 56 which co-operates with a rack 55, connected to the worms. On failure of either the electrical or hydraulic system the axial movement of the worms is locked, and control is purely from the motors 31 and 32. In a modification the worms may have helical splines at their ends so that axial motion gives rise to rotation and increases the speed of operation of the worms.
