Abstract

A rolling mill includes screw jacks for adjusting the roll gap, each jack being shortened or lengthened by a predetermined amount upon each operation of an actuator for the jack. In one form, Fig. 1, jacks 27 are positioned between chocks 12 and 13, each jack including rotatable nuts 28 and 29 provided with ratchet teeth inclined in opposite directions. A pneumatically or hydraulically operated pawl is associated with each nut, the two pawls rotating the nuts in steps of one tooth. The jacks can be used for coarse pass adjustment, in conjunction with accurate adjustment by spring or hydraulic prestressing 22, or can be used for automatic gauge control. In an alternative form, Fig. 4, each jack is formed by similar independently operated upper and lower parts. The upper part 41 includes a threaded section 40 which is rotated by a pinion to provide axial movement of a sleeve 46 which is slidably mounted in a block 45. The pinion is rotated through one tooth, upon operation of hydraulically actuated rack. Two racks are located on opposite sides of the pinion, each including a tooth which can be moved both radially of the pinion, for disengagement from the pinion, and tangentially, for rotation of the pinion or return to a starting position. The racks are arranged to rotate the pinion in opposite directions. The threads 40 and 50 of the jack parts are of different pitch to permit a differential adjustment of the jack length. The two jack parts can, alternatively, be formed integrally, a single pinion rotating both parts. The jacks can be located between the chocks of either work rolls or backing rolls, or between a housing and the upper or lower chocks.
