Abstract

1,150,582. Rolling tubes. VALLOUREC S.A. 25 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965], No. 33388/66. Heading B3M. A thin tube is rolled from a blank by reducing the major part of the blank to its final thickness, while reducing the terminal part to a lesser extent. A tube having outside diameters D, and D2, Fig. 2, is thus produced. The blank is rolled on a mandrel by means of three rolls 1 which are each supported at one end in a fixed plate 4 and at the other end in an angularly adjustable plate 5. Rotation of the plate 5 by a piston cylinder assembly 11 against stops 9 and 10 varies the spacing of the rolls from, and also their angle of skew relative to, the centre line 6. The stop 9 is adjustable by being threaded into a fixed support, while the stop 10 too can be progressively adjusted during rolling to permit tapering of the blank. A photo-electric cell which detects the end of the blank immediately before it reaches the rolls, causes rotation of the plate 5 to move the rolls outwardly, thereby producing a tube with a thickened end. Each bearing, Fig. 6, for supporting one end of a roll is radially adjustable by means of a threaded piston 16 which is rotatable by a worm 19 and gear 18 within a fixed nut 20. The head of the piston is housed within a cylinder portion 15 of the bearing, pressure fluid being supplied to the cylinder such that under excessive rolling loads the bearing is able to move outwardly as a safety measure. The worms 19 of all the bearing are interconnected by gearing to provide simultaneous radial adjustment of the three rolls.
