Abstract
1308680 Rolling tubes F COCKS 1 Dec 1970 [2 Dec 1969] 56924/70 Heading B3M A check bloom is rolled into a seamless tube in two skew-rolling stands arranged in tandem. The bloom 14 may be supported by a mandrel 16 or by a stopper rod while being rolled in a first stand 2, and supported by a second mandrel 24 (or stopper rod) in the second stand 4. The mandrels or rods are mounted for free rotation in respective bearings 18 and 26. In order to produce a tube without twist and without build up of material between the stands, the rolls 10 and 12 of the second stand are arranged to rotate the tube at the same speed as in the first stand and to feed the tube forwardly under slight tension. For this purpose the speed and skew angles of the rolls 10 and 12 are adjustable, whereas those of the rolls of the first stand may be constant. After being rolled in the two stands, the tube may be transported, still supported on the mandrel 24, to a further pair of similar stands in tandem. Alternatively, the tube may be reverse rolled in the stands 2 and 4, or rolled through them in the same direction for a number of passes. The hollow bloom may be produced by centrifugal or continuous casting, or by inserting an interior tube into a chill mould. If the bloom is produced in a piercing press, the piercing tool may be left in the bloom to above as a mandrel in the first rolling pass. In an alternative arrangement, a solid bloom may be pierced in the first rolling stand.
