950,003. Winches. LAWRENCE, SCOTT & ELECTROMOTORS Ltd., R. L. C. TESSIER, J. N. STRETTON-DOWNES, and P. W. KING. Aug. 14, 1962 [Aug. 14, 1961; June 18, 1962], Nos. 29296/61 and 23359/62. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A winch drum drive is automatically controlled, for maintaining cable tension between predetermined values, by means sensing variations in the axial thrust on the worm of a worm- and-wheel reduction gearing. In one example, a worm 4, Fig. 2, is axially slidable on a splined drive-shaft 5 and is yieldingly held axially by coil springs 17 mounted within the hollow worm 4 and engaged between end plates 8, 15 attached respectively to the shaft 5 and worm 4. Axial movements of the worm 4 are transmitted through a rack-and-pinion 18, 19 to electric motor control means such as a rotary switch element 27, Fig. 1 (not shown), having contacts associated with forward and reverse motor switches. The switch element and pinion 19 may be relatively rotated to obtain predetermined tension settings. Modifications are referred to in which electrical strain gauges, hydraulic load cells or pneumatic load measuring devices determining the axial thrust of the worm are used to control the driving motor.
