Abstract
1,239,594. Constant tension winches. F. DURAND. 16 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 49172/68. Heading B8B. The drum 1 of a constant tension winch is driven from a reversible motor/brake unit 2 through a pinion 8 meshing with a crown wheel 7 keyed to the drum shaft 4, the pinion 8 being mounted in a casing 13, 19 freely mounted on the shaft 4 but rotationally restricted by a resilient blade 15, any variation in tension in a cable 27 causing appropriate operation of the motor/brake unit 2 due to a control box 20 sensing relative movement between the casing and the winch structure 6. The control box 20 is mounted on the structure 6 and contains contacts operated by a rack 21 and pinion 22, the latter being driven by a rack bar 23 extending from the box 20 and ball jointed to the casing 19. The resilient blade 15 is secured at one end 16 to the structure 6 and at the other end is pinned via a link 14 to the casing 13. The pinion 8 is driven through a reduction gear 3 and a sliding spline and double universal jointed shaft. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) the resilient connection between the casing and the structure is formed by a piston and cylinder arrangement in which the piston is spring biased longitudinally in both directions into a central position. In this embodiment the motor/brake unit control box may be fitted to sense the relative movement between the piston and cylinder.
