as indicated in Fig.
1, fills the rear end of the shell and is secured therein by a screw 13. It will thus be apparent that the feed screw may be rotated iii a clockwise direction, locking forward, but that it cannot be rotated in a countercloclrwise direction. Any other ratchet mechanism, as a ratchet wheel on the screw, and a liXed pawl, may obviously be used. The feed screw is provided with a longitudinal splineway 1d with which a spline 15 formed in a collar 16 is slidably engaged. The collar 16 is a sliding t for the outer periphery of the feed screw 5, and is provided upon its own periphery with ratchet teeth 17. Surrounding these ratchet teeth is a gear 18 in which there are suitably mounted pawls 19 adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 17, the gear 18 being held in concentric relation with the sleeve 16 by collars 20 and 21 on the latter, the last mentioned collar being threadedly secured to the sleeve 16. A nut 22 threadedly engages the feed screw at a point in advance of the sleeve 16, this nut having spur teeth upon its peripheral surface whereby it constitutes a pinion 23. A ball thrust bearing 24 is disposed between the pinion 23 and a shoulder 25 formed integral with a housing 26 which is secured to the rear end of the tool 1 and so the shock and rearward pressure exerted by the tool upon the nut 22 and transmitted by it to the feed screw 5 will not unduly interfere with rotation of the pinion 23.
It will be noted that the nut 22 is provided with less teeth upon its periphery than are provided upon the pinion. 18. A shaft 2? is jeurnaled parallel to the feed screw 5 and above the saine, being supported in a suitable manner in the casing 26, the casing being split along the line of the bearings of this shaft to permit ease of assembly. The shaft 2? has lreyed thereto three gears, a bevel gear 28 and a pair of spurk gears 29 and 3VO, the gear 30 having more teeth than the gear 29 and the gears 29 and 30 respectively meshing with the gear 18 and pinion 23. A bevel pinion 31 is mounted upon a shaft 32 disposed at an angle to the shaft 27 and the gear 31 interineshes with the gear 28. A manual rotating handle 3?) serves to rotate the shaft 32.
From the foregoing description the mode of operation of this device .will be readily apparent. Assume that the handle 33 is turned by the operator in a clockwise direction. This will result in a 'counter-clockwise rotation of the shaft 27 and so of the pinion 29 and gear 30. The pinion 29 which intermeshes with the gear 18 will cause the latter to rotate in a clockwise direction and the pawls 19 will cause the sleeve 16 also to rotate in a clockwise direction and so the feed screw, which is free to rotate in a clockwise direction as previously described, will be so rotated. rlhe gear 30 rotating in a counter-clockwise direction will rotate the nut22 in a. clockwise direction, but the angular speed of rotation of the nut is greater than the angular speed of rotation of the feed screw by reason of the tooth ratios of the several gears employed. Accordingly, the tool l will be fed forward at a speed much less than would result from the speed of rotation of the nut 22 if the feed screw remained stationary, and thereby a relatively slow and easy forward feed will be provided.
When the handle 83 is turned in a counterclockwise direction, the shaft 27 will be turned clockwise and so will the pinion 29 and gear 30. The pinion 29 will then turn the gear 18 in a counter-clockwise direction and the pawls will slip over the teeth on the ratchet'upon the sleeve 16, this being assured by reason of the factvthat the feed screw is prevented from counter-clockwise rotation by the pawls 11 and the ratchet 12. The feed screw will therefore remain stationary. The gear 30 will .drive the nut 22 and accordingly the retractive movement of the tool 1 will'be equivalent to the full speed that would be accomplished by the use of the nut upon the 'feed screw. It will therefore be evident that the tool may be rapidly retracted and slowly fed forward as may be desired, the change in the rate of feed being` automatically accomplished by the mechanism disclosed.
While lY have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims. f
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. ln a rock drilling mechanism, a drilling tool, and feeding means therefor including a reversely rotatable operating member, said feeding means including means always automatically operative to provide different rates of feed upon vrotation of said member in opposite directions at substantially equiangular speeds.
2. Ina rock drilling mechanism, a drilling motor, and reversible mechanical feeding means therefor including a reversely rotatable loperating member, said feeding means including means always automatically operative to provide different rates of feed -upon-rotation of said :member in opposite Vdirections yat substantially equiangular speeds.

In a rock drilling mechanism, a drilling motor, andl reversible feeding means therefor comprising a rotatable feed screw, means for positively preventing rotation of said screw in one direction, a feed nut operatively connected to said motor and cooperating with said feed screw, said nut being rotatable on said screw, a member having a connection with said screw preventing relative rotation but permitting relative longitudinal movement, a member rotatable relative to said other member during rotation of said nut in one direction and adapted to be fixed relative thereto during opposite rotation of said nut, and means for actuating said members and feed nut comprising a plurality of pairs of meshing gears.
16. In a rock drilling mechanism, a drilling motor, and feeding means therefor comprising a feed screw operatively connected to said motor, and a cooperating reversely rotatable operating element surrounding said feed screw and adapted to rotate with the same when rotated in one direction or rotate relative thereto when rotated in; an opposite direction.
17. In a rock drilling mechanism, a drilling motor, and feeding means therefor com,- prising a feed screw operatively connected to said motor, and a cooperating reversely rotatable operating element surrounding said feed screw and rotatable relative thereto when rotated in one direction and rotatable therewith at the same angular rate therewith when rotated in the other direction.
