GEORGE WESTON SLATER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
HAND BORING- MACHINE.
Application filed December This invention relates to improvements in hand boring machines and more particularly to that class of hand boring machines covered by my previously issued United States Patcut, No. 1,527,493, dated February 24th,
1925, and the objects of the present invention are to provide a hand boring machine in which means are provided for rotating the auger at any point therearound instead of, as in the above-mentioned patent, from the extreme end.
\Vith these and other objects in View the invention consists essentially in the combination, with a boring auger and means for l5 suitably supporting it, of an interiorly threaded sleeve for the auger provided with a collar designed to engage with the hub of a gear wheel which, in turn, meshes with a hand operated pinion whereby the gear wheel is rotated, at any point thereof, to
operate the auger and a pivotally mounted pin for locking the gear Wheel to the auger in such manner so as to permit the latter to travel in the sleeve.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my improved auger set up,
Figure 2 is a plan view,
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the sleeve and collar, and
Figure 1 is a section on line Jr-A of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the machine as a whole set up ready for operation on the face A of a vein of soft mineral such as coal or the like. The machine comprises the main auger 10 which is provided, at an suitable point in its length, with a sleeve 12 interiorly threaded at 13 to engage with the auger thread 1%. The sleeve 12 is formed with an enlarged collar 15 adapted to engage with the lower hub por tion 16 of a gear wheel 17 provided with an extended upper hub portion 18. A suitably formed support 19 is formed on the sleeve 12 and mounted therein in a bearing 20 is a spindle 21, on the inner end of which is keyed a pinion 22 designed to mesh with the gear wheel 17, the outer end of the spindle 21 being provided with a crank and handled operating member 23 so that, on the latter being turned, the gear wheel 17, through the pinion 22, is rotated and with it 2, 1925. Serial No. 72,738.
the hub portion 16 within the collar 15 and i the extended hub portion 18.
To cause the auger to rotate I provide the hub portion 18 with a locking pin 24, screwthreaded at 25 and designed to loosely engage with the auger in such manner as to rotate it but atthe same time permit the auger, when rotated, to travel through the sleeve 12. This locking pin 24 is carried in one end of the embracing member 26 supported by the bracket 27 on the hub portion 17, the other end of this member being suitably bent and extending through and into the hub, as at 28, to register with the pin 24-, see Figures 2 and 4, one on each side of the auger member 10.
For supporting the auger in operative position, as illustrated in Figure 1, the construction is similar to'that already described in my previously issued, above-mentioned United States application. It is not considered necessary, therefore, to go into the details further.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
hat I claim as my invention is:
In a device of the character described and in combination, an auger, an internally threaded sleeve adapted to engage with the auger thread and formed with an enlarged collar, a gear wheel formed with a tubular hub adapted to engage with said collar, a supporting arm on the sleeve, and a spindle in said arm, and a pinion on said spindlev adapted to mesh with the gear wheel, manually operable means connected to the spindle, a supporting bracket on the tubular hub, a suitably bent bracket member supported therein, a screw-threaded locking pin adjustably mounted in one end of said bracketand adapted to extend into the hub to engage and disengage with the anger, the opposite end of the pin-carrying bracket be ing suitably bent to register in spaced relationship with said pin.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE WESTON SLATER.
