[Also in Group XXX] The load-applying member of a jack used for testing the physical qualities of materials is moved by a nut turning on a lead screw, the screw or the nut being driven and the other either driven or allowed to turn. As shown in Fig. 1, a load-applying member 19 is moved axially by a nut 12 on a lead screw 2, both the nut and the screw being rotated through worm gearing by an electric motor 30. The screw is driven at a constant speed from a shaft 33 and the nut at a variable speed, which may be faster or slower than that of the screw, through an infinitely-variable gear-box 38 controlled by a hand wheel 58. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) a 3-speed gear-box is substituted for the gear-box 38 and a 2-speed gear-box is inserted between the shaft 33 and the sprocket 35, giving six possible speed ratios between the shafts 6, 16. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the drive to the shaft 16 is dispensed with and the nut is allowed to rotate at a speed controlled by a hand control 94, which presses a brake pad 90 against a disc 89 rotating with the shaft 16. Reverse movement of the member 19 is obtained in the last two embodiments by reversing the direction of the drive motor.
