[Also in Groups XXIII and XXIV] The jaws 10, 11 of a machine-tool workholder are driven towards one another by an electric motor 15 through a friction coupling 18 which slips on overload and are driven apart through a one-way clutch 20. The coupling 18 and clutch 20 are connected in parallel between a pinion 17 geared to the motor 15 and a shaft 12 formed with opposite hand threads 13, 14 which engage the jaws 10, 11 respectively. In Fig. 3 (not shown), only one jaw is axially movable. In Figs. 4-6 (not shown), two workholders are geared together and the jaws of one workholder are allowed limited axial movement relative to the other. In Figs. 7-10 (not shown), the above drive is applied to a machine which can be swivelled relatively to the workpiece, wherein the threaded part of the shaft 12 engages a sleeve which is freely rotatable within and axially movable with one of the jaws whereby the jaw may be moved axially, independently of the screw, by rotating the sleeve manually. The sleeve may be locked relative to the jaw for power operation. The jaws may be angularly adjustable.
