The engagement of a load by axial movement of the rotor of an induction motor is ensured, even under conditions of reduced voltage, by the provision of a spring which aids the movement of the rotor. When the motor is energized, rotor 13 moves axially to engage pin 16 with elongated teeth 17a on pinion 17 and this drives shaft 21 through gearing 18. When the motor is switched off rotor 16 falls to disengage the drive and compress spring 23 which reduces the upward force necessary for engagement. If the rotor is horizontally mounted an additional spring 24 is required to move rotor 13 out of engagement with gear 17 when the motor is switched off.
