Be it known that we, FLORENCE C. BIG- cnnr, J12, and LLOYD JoNns, both citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Grafton and Wilkinsburg, both in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Screw-Down Mechanism for Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, end and front elevations of a rolling mill having our invention applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view.
Our invention has relation to screw-down mechanism for rolling mills, and is designed to provide a mechanism of this character in which an independent adjustment of the two screws can readily be iiiade without dismantling the gear. in the operation of mills that the adjustment of the holding-down screws becomes such that one of them is slightly in advance of the other, thus holding the rolls out of gage. As heretofore constructed, it has been necessary to more or less dismantle the screw-down mechanism in order to correct this adjustment. Our invention provides a screw-clown mechanism in which the same gearing, actuated in its normal manner, effects an up or down movement of the screws; and which, actuated in a different manner, will move one screw upwardly and the other downwardly and thus equalize and bring them to a proper adjustment.
Our invention also provides means of simple character whereby the actuating gearing can be readily thrown out of engagement when desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which we have shown one application of our invention, the numeral 2 designates the housing of the mill, 3 the top roll, 4 the bottom roll, and 5 and 6 the holding-down screws which actuate the upper roll in any usual or well known manner. In accordance with our invention one of these screws is provided with a right hand thread and the other one with a left hand thread, as indicated in Fig. 2. of each screw is a worm wheel 7. These worm wheels are engaged, respectively, by the worms 8 and 9 on the transverse shaft 10. The two wheels 7 are, respectively, of right and left hand thread, as are also the two worms 8 and 9. It will be apparent therefore that when the shaft 10 is rotated in one direction, both screws will be simul taneously moved downward; and that when rotated in the opposite direction, both screws will be simultaneously drawn up. The shaft 10 may be rotated either manually in a small mill through a hand wheel 11, or the like; or it may be connected to any suitable motor.
The shaft 10 has a journal portion 12 at one end mounted in a bearing 13. At the opposite end portion it has'the journal 14 which is mounted in a sleeve 15 seated on the shaft 10 between the two thrust collars l6. Said sleeve has an external screw thread which engages a corresponding screw thread in a bearing member 17. 18 is a hand wheel or other actuating device connected to said sleeve.
It will be readily seen that when the sleeve 16 is rotated it will cause the shaft 10 tobe moved endwise in its bearings, thereby causing a corresponding movement of the two worms 8 and 9. This endwise movement of the worms causes both worm wheels 7 to be rotated in the same direction, thereby raising one screw and lowering the other screw to the same extent. In "this manner the adjustment of the two screws can be readily corrected without in any way dismantling or disengaging the gearing.
In order to permit the worms 8 and 9 to be thrown out of engagement with the worm wheels 7 when desired, the bearing members 13 and 17 may be of eccentric form and rotatably mounted in the brackets 19. The two bearing members are shown as Connected by the bar or rod 20; and by moving this downwardly, said members will be rotated in their bearings and, by reason of their eccentricity, will carry the shaft 10 sufficiently away from the worm wheels 7 to disengage the worms 8 and 9.
The advantages of our invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, since it provides a very simple and convenient mechanism for maintaining the rolls in gage It will be readily understood that the invention is applicable to other forms of rolling mills, the particular form shown in the drawings being illustrative only. Also that various changes can. be made in the details'of construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention as defined in the appended claims.
WVe claim:
' 1. Screw-down mechanism for rolling mills, comprising a pair of holding-down screws, one of said Screws having a right hand thread and the other a left hand thread, a worm wheel connected to each of said screws, the two worm wheels being of opposite threads, an endwise movable shaft having two worms thereon, one worm engaging with each worm wheel, means for normally rotating said shaft, and means for effecting an endwise movement of the shaft while its worms are in engagement with said worm wheels to thereby actuate said Wheels, substantially as described.
2. Screw-down mechanism for rolling mills, comprising a pair of holding-down screws having right and left hand threads respectively, worm wheels of opposite hand connected to the respective screws, a transverse shaft having worm wheels of opposite hand thereon and engaging the respective worm wheels, means for rotating said shaft, and means for effecting an endwise move-- ment-thereof, substantially as described.
3. Screw-down mechanism for rolling one of said bearings, and means for actuating said sleeve member, said Sleeve member being engaged with the shaft to move it endwise therewith, substantially as described.
5. Screw-down mechanism for rolling mills, comprising a pair of holding-down screws, a transverse shaft geared to both screws, and rotatable eccentric bearings in which said shaft is mounted, said shaft also having an endwise movement in said bearings, and means for effecting such movement, substantially as described.
