ROLL-RELIEVING DEVICE FOR ROLLING-MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 5,554, dated August 7, 1900.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. HUSTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain Improvements in Roll-Relieving Devices for Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a device for quickly relieving the rolls of rolling-mills. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of sufficient of a rolling-mill to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspec-' tive view of the adjusting-Wedges and cap.
Heretofore the mechanism for relieving the rolls has been generally placed between the housings; but this is objectionable, as it fills the space between the housings that should be kept clear.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the housings of an ordinary rolling-mill, and B the rolls. Z2 represents the boxes for the upper roll, and mounted above the boxes are the plates cl.
D D are two wedges mounted'on the plate d of each housing, and on the plate is a rib cl, extending into a groove 01 in the under side of each wedge. This rib keeps the wedges in line. portion and enlarged side portions which have screw-threaded perforations (P.
E is a cap beveled at e e on the under side to correspond to the taper of the wedges, and this cap fits over each pair of wedges, as shown in Fig. 1. Each cap is held in place by the usual adj Listing-screw F in the housing A.
I I are two screw-rods. These screw-rods are made in sections 71 7." i coupled together by ordinary couplings 1". The portions it are only threaded, and the portion 2' above the rolls is plain. Each section t' 2" has a right and a left hand screw-thread. The rods 1 I pass through the wedges D D, as shown in Fig. 2,-and the threaded portions of the rods mesh with the threads in the openings (Z of the wedges, so that when the rods are turned in one direction they will draw the wedges together and when they are Each wedge has a central inclined turned in the opposite direction they will separate the wedges, and thus quickly relieve the rolls.
By making the wedges D as described with the screw-threaded openings at each side the pressure is taken by the'solid portion of each wedge.
The screw-rods in the present instance are operated by means of a rack G, connected to the piston-rod g of a hydraulic cylinder G. The rack is a double-faced rack having teeth on both sides and passes between the shafts J J, on which are pinionsjj, with which the teeth of the rack engage. The shafts J J are mounted on suitable bearings K K, projecting from a suitable base K.
The shafts J J are connected to the screwrods I I by connecting-rods ,L L, coupled to the shafts J J by gimbal-joints Z Z and to the screw-rods I I by gimbal-joints Z Z. Thus as the rack is driven upward the shafts J J will be rotated in opposite directions, and this movement will be imparted to the screwrods I I, and these rods areso threaded that both sides of the wedges will be moved in unison. Thus one screw-threaded section has a right and a left handed thread and the other section opposite it will have a left and a right handed thread. It will be understood, however, thatv this method of driving these screw-shafts is not essential to the main fea tures of my invention, and other means of driving may be resorted to without departing from the invention. For instance, both shafts may be driven in the same direction, in which case the screw portions of the shafts will be threaded alike.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination in a roll-releasing device for rolling-mills, of the housings, rolls, wedges, a screw passing through the wedges for controlling the same, and means for' quickly operating the screw, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the housings, rolls, bearings for the rolls, caps mounted above the bearings, a pair of wedges between the caps and the bearings, threaded openings in the wedges, screws extending through the openings,and means for operating the screws, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the housings, rolls,
bearings for the upper rolls, caps mounted above each bearing, the caps being beveled on the under side, a pair of wedges mounted upon each bearing and tapered to correspond to the taper of the cap, two screws passing through threaded openings in the wedges,and means for turning the screws in unison, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the housings, rolls, bearings for the rolls mounted in the housings, caps mounted above each bearing, said caps being beveled on the under side, a pair of wedges mounted between each cap and the bearing,two threaded openings in each wedge, screw-rods made up of three sections coupled together, two of the sections being screwthreaded each having right and left hand threads, with means for turning the screws so as to move the wedges in unison toward or from each other, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the housings, rolls mounted thereon, bearings for the rolls, caps above the rolls,wedges mounted between the caps and the bearings, screw-rods extending through the wedges, two shafts connected to the screw-rods, pinions on said shafts, a rack engaging both pinions, and means for moving said rack, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the housings, rolls mounted thereon, bearings for the rolls, two wedges mounted above each upper bearing for the rolls each of said wedges having a central inclined portion and an enlarged side portion, a threaded opening in each side portion, a cap-plate shaped to conform to the inclined portion of the wedges, and adjustingscrews mounted in the threaded openings of thewedges, substantially as described.
