Drafting mechanism comprises a doubleapron arrangement in which the upper apron roll 34 is mounted in side members 40 of a cradle having a tensor 42, and the lower apron encircles a driving roll 22, a tensioning roll 28 and a bar 24, the members 40 having projections 46 which engage recesses 26 in the apron bar, to restrain lateral movement of the cradle relative to the apron bar. As shown, the upper roller 34 is one of a dual boss pair each with a cradle and an apron, the tensor bar being common to each cradle. The roller 22 runs the length of the machine. There are also holding rollers 18,16 and delivery rollers 14,12, the upper rollers being of the dual-boss type and the lower rollers running through the machine. Each cradle 40 has recesses 44 embracing the arbors of the associated roll 34. Relatively to position the upper and lower aprons, a screw 48 adjustably bears on the bar 24 between the cradles. To support the holding rollers 18 the part of the tensor 24 between the cradles carries an arm 50, and the central part of the arbor of the rollers are embraced by recesses in a U- sectioned saddle 60 of which the forward end 64 extends through, and bears on an upturned edge of an aperture in arm 50. To position the saddle relatively to the cradles the arm 50 carries an adjustable screw 52 just long enough to engage the depending sides of the saddle. To support the delivery rollers 14, the central part of their arbor is embraced by the front part 66 of a saddle which is adjustably secured at 74 to a rear part 68 which is universally-mounted at 70 to saddle 60. A weighting-hook 58 is connected to saddle 66 at 59.
