Abstract

944,969. Thermal regenerators. BMW TRIEBWERKBAU G.m.b.H. March 29, 1962 [April 7, 1961], No. 12069/62. Heading F4K. A regenerative heat exchanger has a rotatable matrix comprising annular laminar discs which are pressed into gas-tight contact in the plane of separation between the air and gas passages by sealing rollers which grip the discs in such a manner that they are forced to splay apart on either side of the separating plane. As shown in Fig. 1, two pairs of sealing and driving rollers 1 are provided, each roller having a cylindrical portion 7 and a frustoconical head 6 so that the line of contact 10 between the outside sheet metal discs 2 and the roller head is at an angle α to a radial plane of the regenerator. In this embodiment the lines 10 are relatively inclined so that the discs are forced into simple curvature with gaps for the passage of air or gas between them. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the lines of contact 10<SP>1</SP> are parallel and the discs 2 are forced into double curvature, while as shown in Fig. 4 the driving and sealing rollers 1 may be located so that the gas duct 4 has twice the cross-section of the air duct 5 and an additional pair of guiding rollers 1<SP>1</SP> are provided in the duct 4. When more than two rollers are employed the rings are forced into shapes of multiple curvature. The regenerator may be elongated between two pairs of oppositely located rollers (Fig. 2, not shown), and the discs may be corrugated with the ridges extending radially.
