Abstract

943,763. Discharging exhaust gases and cooling water. H. M. WIKSTROM. Jan. 23, 1962 [Jan. 23, 1961], No. 2434/62. Heading B7M. [Also in Division F1] A diffuser, e.g. for use with the exhaust pipe of a motor boat through which both exhaust gases and cooling water are discharged, comprises a housing 14 and an impeller 26 mounted on a shaft 32. The impeller comprises an odd number of blades 30, e.g. five, and is positioned so that it is rotated by the exhaust gases passing through the pipe augmented by the air stream 42 on the outside of the boot. The diffuser is secured to the exhaust pipe 12 by set-screws 16 and sealed thereto by a gasket 18. In operation the impeller breaks up the cooling water into a spray which cools the exhaust gases and to some extent silences the exhaust noise. A three-blade impeller is also described.
