Abstract
567,569. Internal-combustion engines. SMITH, F. B. Feb. 16, 1944, No. 2884. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Propulsion means for water craft comprises an outboard motor securable to the transome or gunwale of the craft and driving a pump rotor b located in a housing c provided with an inclined substantially rectangular water, inlet 8 and an oppositely-directed substantially elliptical outlet f. The latter may discharge above or below water level, and may be fitted with transversely curved radial vanes i, whilst the inlet g may be fitted with a grating. The housing c may be adjusted manually about the drive shaft a for steering purposes and provided with a protecting skeg h. Some of the water is forced up a pipe v into a tubular member t connected to the engine water jacket, whilst the discharged water induces a flow of the exhaust gases through pipes w. In one modification, the rotor is of the centrifugal type, and in another, the axis of the rotor is horizontal and the housing circular in cross-section.
