Abstract

1,002,596. High speed air turbines. A. LUCIEN, L. BRUNEL, and R. M. MERCIER. July 20, 1962 [July 22, 1961; Jan. 29, 1962], No. 28023/62. Heading F1T. An air turbine in which supersonic frequencies produce audible beat frequencies has means whereby the casing, feed nozzles, turbine wheel and outlet ports or passages are designed in such a way as to eliminate at least one of the supersonic frequencies. Two nozzles may be disposed with one nozzle displaced by one half of the blade pitch from a diametral location or diametrically disposed nozzles may act upon a rotor having an odd number of blades. A single nozzle may act upon two axially adjoining rotors, rotatively displaced relative to each other by half of the blade pitch and separated by a disc of diameter equal to that of the blading. In this embodiment the blades may be helical to reduce the speed of the exhaust air laterally. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5) the air exhausts from the turbine into axially disposed chambers 27, 28 thereby eliminating the supersonic wave caused by the blades passing an exhaust port.
