987,582. Radial flow gas turbines. W. EBERSPACHER, and H. EBERSPACHER, [trading as GERATEBAU EBERSPACHER HGo] Oct. 24, 1961 [Oct. 25, 1960], No. 38086/61. Heading FIT. A radial flow gas turbine has the crosssectional flow area of the nozzle ring variable by means of blanking members, each of which may be positioned in a nozzle on the nozzle ring so as to blank off at least part of the inlet area of the nozzle and each extending over the whole length of the nozzle in the direction of flow through the nozzle in which it is mounted so that the reduction in the inlet area of the nozzle is accompanied by a corresponding reduction in the outlet area of the nozzle. The nozzle ring 2, Fig. 1, of a radial inward flow gas turbine driving an engine supercharger has blanking members 3a, 3b mounted in nozzles to reduce the nozzle flow area. In a modification, Fig. 3, blanking members 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d are associated with coverings 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d extending between the end walls of the scroll casing 1. Nozzle ring 2 with its blanking members 3a to 3d or the mountings of scroll coverings 4a to 4d can be rotated through an angle corresponding to the pitch of one turbine blade so as to vary further the flow area of the nozzle ring 2. In a further modification, nozzle ring 2 is fixed and blanking members 3a to 3d can be rotated to a limited extent about the turbine wheel axis by bolts passing through the walls of the scroll case 1 and attched to an external ring. The nozzles opposite coverings 4a to 4d in the scroll case 1 may be sub-divided by additional guide vanes.
