937,568. Floating roofs for tanks. J. H. WIGGINS. Nov. 10, 1961 [Nov. 21, 1960], No. 40301/61. Class 69 (1). A sealing mechanism for a tank comprises a floating roof 20 with upstanding peripheral sidewalls 24 between which and the tank wall 12 is an upstanding annular sealing element 40 with its top above the liquid surface and its bottom below it. The element 40 comprises a series of overlapping segments 41, of steel or reinforced plastic, connected by clamping linkages 50 which are supported on the wall 24 by pantograph linkages 70 and pressed into contact with the tank wall 12 by push rods 64 urged by springs and plungers set in casings 63 on the roof wall 24. An annular curtain 80 impervious to petroleum products is attached at 102 to the top of the segment 41 and hangs down into the liquid 11. A diaphragm 90, also petroleum resisting, connects with the curtain 80 at 102, hangs down in contact with it at 92, lies in folds 93 along the surface of the liquid 11 and is fixed to the roof wall 24 at 101 contacting it as at 91. The diaphragm 90 may be continuous with the curtain 80. The curtain may be cemented to the segment 41 along its length (Figs. 5B and 5C, not shown), and/or it may, at 480, be cemented to an annular bead 481 of rubber or the like secured to the bottom of the segment 41 as in Fig. 6C.
