Abstract

936,446. Floating covers for tanks. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. July 25, 1962 [Jan. 19, 1962], No. 28616/62. Class 69 (1). A tank for storage of volatile liquid has disposed around the periphery of its floating roof 21 in contact with the tank wall 22 a seal of resilient material 29 having a substantially triangular cross-section 29a. The block of resilient material 29 is of polyurethane. It is covered by a protective envelope 30 of polyurethane or other plastic coated with an elastomer such as polyvinyl chloride. The block and envelope are clamped at the top and bottom to angle members 33 and 41 which may be supported from the top of the roof-side at 53 on hangers 48 or welded directly on to the side 28 (Figs. 3, 9, 10 and 11, not shown), or it may be clamped direct at 83 and 84 to the wall 28. A sealing band 54 may be vulcanized to the envelope as in Fig. 2. The back of the block 29 may be recessed as in Fig. 5, to provide space for elastic deformation, or it may have spaced alternating rows of conical or cylindrical recesses formed in the back surface (Figs. 10 to 13, not shown). The tip of the triangular section may be truncated as at 29c of Fig. 5.
