Abstract

917,310. Floating roofs for tanks. PITTSBURGH-DES MOINES STEEL CO. Feb. 2, 1961 [Feb. 4, 1960], No. 3956/61. Class 69 (1). A liquid storage tank has a floating roof 12, 13, 14 with a seal comprising a weather shield 18 extending outward from its periphery to contact with its outer edge 19, the inner surface of the tank wall 10, inner 20 and outer 22 flexible curtain portions depending respectively from the inner and outer edges of the shield 18 adjacent the periphery of the roof and the inner tank wall surface, a flexible intermediate portion 24, and magnetic means 23 and 30 for holding the inner 20 and outer 22 curtain portions in sealing contact with the roof and the wall. The shield 18 is of rubber or the like with flexible edges and a relatively stiff central port, reinforced with ribs R, stiff enough to remain standing upwardly and outwardly when its edge 19 is above the top of the wall 10. Circumferentially spaced straps 25 on the curtain 20 loop over hooks 26 on the roof. The portion 24 is of greater width than the space between roof and wall to allow for eccentricity. The magnetic means 23 and 30 are annular strips of substantial width and small thickness attached to the curtains 20, 22. They are of a magnetic plastic material or are annular bands of flexible magnetic material as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,627,097. A plastic foam block resting on the portion 24 may act as a spacer between the bands 23 and 30 (Fig. 8, not shown).
