Abstract
920,907. Floating roofs for tanks. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. Jan. 10, 1961 [Feb. 23, 1960], No. 993/61. Class 69 (1). A cylindrical tank 10 has a floating roof 20 with its side wall 24 carrying a number of circumferentially-spaced stays 50 which prevent the riding-up of an annular seal 30 moving with the roof 20 and comprising a partially submerged hollow tubular sealed casing 30 of flexible impervious material containing an annular resilient solid body 40 which extends between the outer 33 and inner 32 walls of the casing to urge them against the tank wall 11 and the roof-wall 24, respectively. The body 40 is of polymethane of cellular structure occupying about 80% of the air space. The sides, but not the bottom of the body 40 are attached to the casing 30 with adhesive 33a. The roof 20 has a flange 26 to which are clamped the two edges of the casing 30, the top end of the stays 50 and arms 61 which support weather hood segments 61 with a flexible wiper 64 which bears against the wall 11. The bottom of each stay 50 is restrained by a loop 51 on the wall 24 and the middle section passes through the casing wall and is sealed therein. The arm 61 has a hook 63 to hold the hoodsegment 61 and a loop 62 to act as a bumper against the tank wall 11. The tank has an outwardly directed flange around its upper rim below which is a catwalk around its outside (Fig. 2, not shown).
