Abstract

895,820. Tank roofs. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., and CHAMPAGNAT, A. Feb. 27, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 7065/61. Class 69 (1) A floating roof for a storage vessel 2 with upright walls 10 comprises a circular peripheral frame 9 crossed by parallel coplanar beams 6 covered by a horizontal sheet 17 of impervious material and having floats 7 on the underside whereby the roof is caused to float with the sheet 17 above liquid level and the lower edges of the vertical webs of the frame 9 and the beams 6 immersed so that vapour over the liquid is trapped below the sheet 17 in pockets formed between the frame 9 and the beams 6. The sheet 17 may be of metal or of plastic material in long strips which are assembled on to the beams 6 with the overlapping edges bolted down under cover strips 22. Alternatively the plastic cover may be folded and introduced for assembly through a trap 50 in the vessels' fixed roof 3. A skirt 34 is adjustably bolted to the frame 9 so as to form a good seal against the wall 10. The skirt is in the form of an invertet " L " (Fig. 1), or a " Z " (Fig. 13, not shown). Its horizontal flange is of flexible polyester resin reinforced with glass fibre. Its upright portion 33a may be of the same material or of sheet metal. The roof is provided with feet 18 which stand on the bottom when the vessel is empty of liquid. Rotation of the roof may be prevented by attached cables. Sampling and air-vent orifices may be provided. In large tanks the beams may be cross-braced.
