Abstract

Wood is rendered fungus-, insect-, bacteria-or fire-proof by gradually immersing in a liquid bath containing a fungicide, insecticide, bactericide or fire resistant agent at a temperature in excess of the boiling point of water and sufficiently high to cause the moisture in the wood to escape under pressure to leave the cells in the wood in an enlarged condition thereby enabling the said liquid to penetrate into the cell structure of the wood and deposit the proofing agent therein, the supply of liquid to the bath being controlled at a rate which avoids exploding of the wood. The wood may be secured in a container to prevent floating and an aqueous solution of sodium silicate, pentachlorophenol, sodium fluoride, magnesium chloride, magnesium carbonate, calcium chloride, potassium silicate, potassium fluoride, sodium bichromate, sodium arsenate, sodium pentachlorophenolate, magnesium chlorate or calcium chlorate, which has been preheated under pressure pumped in.
