Abstract

Wood-preserving solution has a pH in the range 7.2 to 8.5 and is formed by dissolving an alkali-metal pentachlorophenate and a greater amount of an alkali-metal arsenate in water. Preferably, the solution contains also a water-soluble chromium salt and an alkali-metal fluoride. The preferred composition contains sodium pentachlorophenate, disodium arsenate (Na2HPO4), sodium chromate and sodium fluoride in the ratio by weight 1 : 2 : 3 : 2. The salts can be formed into a dry composition, which can be stored until required. If necessary, the pH can be adjusted to within the above limits by the addition of soda ash or acid. Wood may be impregnated with these compositions by the conventional empty- and full-cell methods. The Specification also describes for purposes of comparison the impregnation of wood with sodium pentachlorophenate alone, sodium pentachlorophenate buffered with sodium carbonate and bicarbonate, and the inorganic salts without any pentachlorophenate.
