Class 140 A composition for preserving wood comprises in aqueous solution : dinitrophenol, a water-soluble fluoride, a water-soluble acidic substance which is added so that the solution will have a pH less than 6, and a non-basic water-soluble corrosion inhibitor. The acidic substance may be the corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion inhibitor may be oxyquinoline sulphate, oxalic acid or mixtures thereof. The composition may also comprise a water-soluble chromate, dichromate or arsenate or a substance to render the wood fireproof or incombustible.
