911,519. Proofing wood against fungi and insects. ALLGEMEINE HOLZIMPRAGNIERUNG Dr. WOLMAN G.m.b.H. March 23, 1959 [April 10, 1958], No. 10024/59. Class 140. A wood-preserving agent, to be used in aqueous solution, contains or forms sparingly water-soluble borates having an atomic ratio boron/metal of at least two of bivalent heavy metals, e.g. copper, zinc or manganese, which form chromates soluble in chromic acid, and between 1.8 and 3.0 molecular proportions of chromic acid for each molecular proportion of the borate contained or formed. The chromic acid may be present as a mixture of an alkali metal chromate or bichromate and an acid, such as sulphuric acid, or an alkali metal pyrosulphate or bisulphate. The borate may be formed from a boron-free compound of the heavy metal, and boric acid, boric anhydride or a mixture of an alkali metal borate and an inorganic acid. The heavy metal compound is preferably soluble in chromic acid, and may be an oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, or, if the chromic acid is supplied in the form of a chromate or chromate, the heavy metal compound may be a nitrate, sulphate or chloride. The agents may contain an excess of boron above that required for an atomic ratio of two, up to two atoms of boron for each atom of hexavalent chromium. The preserving agent can be applied as an aqueous solution or paste by any conventional impregnating process. In one example, wood is brought to 30% moisture content in a cylinder, vacuum is applied, and a 4% solution of preservative is admitted while maintaining the vacuum. The vacuum is then removed and pressure may be applied. In another example, unseasoned poles are debarked and cut white. Their surface is coated evenly with the preservative in paste form. The coated poles are stacked and covered with a water-impermeable sheet. After three months. the wood is re-stacked to dry. In a third example, wooden parts of a roof, window frames and the like are sprayed with a 10% aqueous solution of the preservative. A day later the coated wood is lightly sprayed with water. This spraying is repeated twice at intervals of one day.
