Abstract

The free and combined chlorine content of water is determined by adding a small amount of a di-alkyl p-phenylene diamine or a salt thereof, as indicator and a sequestering agent which may be sodium hexametaphosphate or ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. The presence of chlorine is indicated by a red coloration, and may be estimated colorimetrically or by titrating with a reducing agent, e.g. ferrous ammonium sulphate solution. Preferably the pH value is maintained between 5.8 and 7.5, and a buffer, e.g. sodium di-hydrogen phosphate, is present. The oxalates, sulphates and hydrochlorides of di-ethyl and di-methyl p-phenylene diamine are specified. Combined chlorine in the form of dichloramine and nitrogen chloride may be individually estimated. The indicator composition may be made up in the form of tablets.
