The wheels 5, Fig. 1, supporting the bridge of an overhead crane have rubber tyres and are guided along a flat trackway 6 by further wheels 9. As described, the wheels 5 and 9 have pneumatic tyres although solid rubber tyres may be used. Five track wheels are arranged in single file at each side of the crane bridge, with a guide wheel at each end of the file. One track wheel in each pile is driven by an electric motor controlled from a cab 7 mounted on the crab. The wheels may be lifted from the trackway by jacks situated one at each end of the file of wheels. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, a bridge 39 is carried on uprights 40, 41, each fitted with four pairs of track wheels 42, Fig. 7, the wheels of the upright 41 running either side of a guide ridge 43, Fig. 6, which is engaged by two pairs of guide wheels 44. One pair of track wheels on each side is driven as described above. In an alternative construction the track wheels may run in single file on top of the ridge 43 or the arrangement may be similar to that shown in Fig. 1, the ledge 6 being a few inches only from the floor. Alernatively, the construction may be as shown in Fig. 6 except for the guide wheels 44 which may engage the walls of the building in which the crane works. Any of the above arrangements may be applied to the crane shown in Fig. 1, and to cranes in which one end of the bridge is supported by a track attached to a wall and the other end by an upright such as 40 or 41.
