Jib cranes; overhead travellers and transporters.-A suspended travelling crane, hoist, or the like comprises a wholly or partly balanced boom 52, adapted to be slued round and moved bodily up and down a depending post which is secured to a framework suspended by two vertical pivots 10 from a pair of trollies 11 running on a central overhead rail 1. The framework of each trolly carries its own electric propelling motor 15 geared to one of the trolly wheels as shown. The framework 4 is fitted with lateral arms 17 engaging guide-rails 19, to prevent side oscillations of the boom, and also carries a motor 36 which rotates a sleeve 25 round the post for slueing the boom. The sleeve 25 has two strips, secured to it at diametrically opposite points. which form guides for rollers 39 carried on the boom sleeve 37, the engagement of the rollers with the guides serving to transmit the slueing movement to the borm. One of the strips is fitted with a rack actuated from the motor 50 on the boom for raising and lowering the latter, but ropes, screw mechanism, or hydraulic or pneumatic means may be employed. The load-hoisting motor 61 also is mounted on the boom and driven a drum 60 carrying a rope passing to the hoisting sheave 59. In modified constructions, the parts are made largely of built-up plate structures instead of castings, and the boom may be telescopic and have a luffing movement in addition to slueing.
