[Class 78(iv)] A ships' cargo hoist comprises a trolley way 34, Fig. 1, which is suspended from and longitudinally adjustable with respect to a girder 27 suspended at each end from, the pivot pin 26 connecting the upper ends of pairs of shear legs 24, 25, the lower ends' of which are pivoted to trucks 8, Fig. 2, movable towards or away from each other to,raise or lower the girder along fore-andaft parallel runways mounted on the deck. In order that the structure can be moved as a unit each pair of trucks is connected by a link, a short link 29. being used when the hoist is in operation and a long link 30, Fig. 3, being substituted for it when the girder is lowered. In the latter position the weight is taken by jacks 76. A motor 20, Fig. 4, on each truck drives a sprocket 17 which engages a chain 7 anchored fore-andaft. This drive can, however, be replaced by rack-and-pinion mechanism. The trolley way rests on rollers, mounted in brackets 31 depending from the girder and has a rack mounted on its top which is engaged by a gear 42 driven by a motor 47. The trolley supports a lifting block 58 and is connected at opposite ends to cables which are wound in opposite directions on a drum 49 driven by a motor 56. The hoisting cable 57 is wound on a drum 59 driven by a motor 61. All the motors are controlled by a multiple push-button pendant 75.
