Abstract
886,808. Overhead travelling cranes. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Jan. 27, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1958], No. 2736/58. Class 78 (4). Crabs 14, 16 of an overhead travelling crane, Fig. 1, run on a girder 8, formed by side beams braced together, and each support a lifting beam 126 extending transversely of the girder 8 by means of ropes 118, 120 passing down on opposite sides of the girder. The ends of rope 118 are secured to a winch drum 18 and the ends of rope 120 are secured to a winch drum 20, the drums 18, 20 being driven through gearing by an electric motor, Fig. 3 (not shown). An auxiliary hoist is provided on each crab and comprises a hook and pulley-block 144, a rope 140, and a winch 22, driven through a reduction gear 102 by a motor 96. Each crab is supported on rails 28, on the girder 8, by wheels 26 which are driven by an electric motor 78. Legs 4, 6 supporting the girder 8 are mounted on bogies provided with wheels 155 running on rails 156, Fig. 2, the bogies 172, 178 being provided with driving-motors 182, 184, the speeds of which are synchronized by means of selsyn motors 186, 188. The crane is erected or dismantled as described in Specification 886,809.
