A carton with an extendible and retractable handle 13 is formed from a single blank, a flap 8 and an intermediate panel 11 joining the handle 13 to wall 4. On erection of the carton, portions 13<SP>1</SP>, 15, coated with pressure sensitive adhesive, are stuck together and by folding along lines 9, 12, 14 to bring components 8, 11, 13 within the carton the reduced portion 13<SP>1</SP> of the handle is made to pass through slot 10. Fig. 5 shows an intermediate position of the handle. Further motion upwards brings the intermediate panel 11 between wall 4 and flap 8 with shoulders 20 abutting fold 9. Downward motion retracts handle 13, movement ceasing when flap 8 and panel 11 become co-planar and parallel to wall 4 the top 16 of the handle then being flush with the top edge of the carton. In further embodiments the handle and associated panels also provide a partial or complete top closure for the carton. At Fig. 18, four intermediate panels 42, 43, 45, 47 are provided, the top closure being panel 36 to which the first intermediate panel 42 is stuck. On extension of the handle 49 the intermediate panels from a box-girder construction with panels 42, 43 in contact and parallel with panel 47 and panel 45 parallel with handle 49. The closure is secured by a tongue and slot connection, the tongue 66 being integral with flap 36. Alternatively the flap 36 may only partially cover the top, providing support for closure panels attached to walls 1, 2, Fig. 1.
