Abstract

Cellulosic material, preferably with moisture content at least 20%, is treated with ionising radiation in the substantial absence of oxygen, e.g. on an inert gas or in a vacuum, thereby inducing cross-linking without the need for the heating step required in Specification 895,479. Cellulosic material includes yarns, fibres, threads and fabrics derived wholly or partly from natural cellulose, e.g. cotton; regenerated cellulose, e.g. viscose rayon, cellulose derivatives, e.g. cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose film and paper. Preferred forms of radiation are g - b - and X-rays or dosages of 5 X 104 to 3 X 106 rads. Prior to irradiation, the material may be topochemically modified by treatment with compounds such as acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic and cinnamic acids, allyl derivatives, acrylonitrile, ethylene imine compounds, or p-isopropylbenzoyl chloride, which promote formation of active groups. The cellulosic material may also be protected against undue degradation during irradiation by treatment with e.g. phenols, cystine, cysteine and methanesulphonyl chloride. Examples describe the irradiation of cotton poplin fabric with g -rays. The tensile strength and resistance to abrasion and creasing is improved.
