Abstract

In the manufacture of fabrics for use, for example, as belting, the fibres or yarns, particularly warp yarns, prior to incorporation into the fabric, are treated with a liquid suspension or dispersion of an un-gelled polyvinyl compound together with a plasticizer therefor, and the treated fibres or yarns are formed into a fabric which is then subjected to a heat treatment to gel the polyvinyl compound. Specified polyvinyl compounds are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylonitrile and mixtures and copolymers thereof. An aqueous emulsion of the polymer and plasticizer or a suspension of the polymer in a liquid plasticizer may be employed. The heat treatment may be combined with the application of pressure and/or tension to the fabric. The fabric may be given an additional surface coating of a polyvinyl compound before or after the heat treatment. The fabric may be made of any yarns, e.g. cotton, asbestos, rayon, wool or hair yarns.
