Abstract

A fabric-lined synthetic rubber article such as a glove overshoe or boot is made by dipping an appropriate form having a fabric lining thereon into a synthetic rubber emulsion containing 1 to 5% by weight of polyvinyl acetate, based on the weight of the emulsion, as a thickening agent, and maintained at a pH of between 8 and 10, and then withdrawing the form and drying and curing the layer of synthetic rubber formed thereon. The fabric lining, which may be of interlock or knitted cotton or rayon yarn, is preferably moistened or impregnated with an alum solution prior to dipping, and it may be gassed to remove loose fibres, and coated with a thin layer of the emulsion, prior to dipping. The synthetic rubber emulsion may be, e.g. a butadiene acrylonitrile co-polymer or a neoprene emulsion or a mixture thereof, and it may contain additional thickening agents e.g. methyl cellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose, accelerators such as zinc oxide, fillers, e.g. kaolin, and water soluble dyes. Drying and curing may be carried out in a wet atmosphere at about 120 DEG to 140 DEG C.
