Abstract

The adhesion of materials comprising cellulose to rubber is improved by depositing calcium or barium oxalate within them. Regenerated cellulose, cotton, linen, jute in the form of staple fibres, continuous filaments, woven or knitted fabrics may be treated. The materials may be impregnated with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble oxalate having no ionizable hydrogen atoms in the acid radical (di-sodium, di-potassium and di-ammonium oxalates) and then with an aqueous solution of a calcium or barium salt having no ionizable hydrogen atoms in the acid radical (calcium chloride, calcium acetate). Two to 3 per cent. of the calcium or barium oxalate by weight of the cellulose may be deposited. Natural or synthetic rubber may be bonded to the treated material. In an example (2), two layers of cotton duck in which calcium oxalate has been deposited are bonded to an intermediate layer of a rubber mix comprising crepe rubber, phenyl-b -naphthylamine, sulphur, stearic acid, zinc oxide and benzthiazol disulphide in a vulcanizing press.
