Abstract
658,116. Coated fabrics; compound sheet materials. RESEARCH ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH RUBBER MANUFACTURERS, and WAKE, W. C. Dec. 20, 1948, No. 32838. [Class 140] Composite textile articles such as protective clothing, belting, hose, and tyre carcasses, are manufactured by forming the fabric, mainly from continuous filament yarn, but with a proportion of spun staple yarn made up of fibres of synthetic material such as nylon or orlon (polyacrylo-nitrile) of high tensile strength, unaffected by wetting, which is found to provide effective keying or adhesion with rubber, rubber-like material, or other high polymer, e.g. polychloroprene, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, linseed oil, tung oil, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyral, or polythene, subsequently applied by dipping, spreading, or calendering, or moulded in contact with the fabric. With woven fabrics the warp may be wholly continuous filaments of say nylon, viscose or rayon and the weft may have similar continuous filaments with say one quarter spun staple yarn uniformly interspersed therewith. The surface of the fabric may be subjected to brushing or teazling to augment the number of projecting fibres. Laminated articles comprising a plurality of fabric layers with interspersed rubber or like layers may also be prepared by this method.
