Abstract

821,427. Laminated belting. GREENGATE & IRWELL RUBBER CO. Ltd., and MARSHALL, D. D. Oct. 1, 1956 [Sept. 29, 1955], No. 27681/55. Class 140. A belt such as a power transmission belt, a conveyer belt or an elevator belt is formed from one or more layers of natural rubber, synthetic rubber or other synthetic thermoplastic material having rubber-like characteristics, e.g. plasticised P.V.C., or alternatively of a woven textile fabric, e.g. of cotton, rayon, or nylon impregnated with such a material, and one or more layers of a flexible polyamide reinforcing material in the form of a sheet or sheets, the two component parts being bonded together by a poly-isocyanate. The sheet is a flat material which has not been produced by the interlacing of yarn or thread but by roiling, calendering, extruding, moulding or an analogous process. The flexible polyamide layer, which may be perforated, may form one surface of the belt, and a layer of vulcanized natural or artificial rubber or of polyvinyl chloride the other. The surfaces to be bonded may be coated with a solution of the polyisocyanate in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. toluene) and the coating allowed to dry before assembly, and after assembly the whole subjected to a heat treatment under pressure. In a modification, a number of narrow strips of polyamide may be secured sideby-side to the rubber or like material or fabric impregnated therewith, the rubber or fabric being of the full width of the belt. Specification 736,997 is referred to.
