917,277. Laminates. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Nov. 9, 1959 [Jan. 2, 1959], No. 283/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. In conveyer .or other belting a base structure is surfaced with a layer of high density polyethylene. The base may consist of one or more layers of regenerated cellulose, cotton, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or other fabric, or parallel threads, and may be unimpregnated, but is preferably impregnated with rubber, balata, guttapercha, a synthetic rubber such as polybutadiene-styrene, polybutadiene-methylmethacrylate, butyl (rubber, polybutadieneacrylonitrile, polyisobutylene or chloroprene, an olefin copolymer, for example of ethylene and propylene with or without a higher olefin, a graft copolymer of natural or synthetic rubber, or polyvinyl chloride. The high density polyethylene may be applied to one or both sides of the base or to one side, around the edges, and to part of the underside; and may be bonded to the base by an extruded or other layer or coating of low density polythene applied to the surfacing layer or the base, a similar layer or coating of partly hydrogenated polybutadiene, or by a peroxide-containing natural or synthetic rubber which may be a separate bonding coating or the impregnating medium of the base. Examples describe the making of surfaced belts in one operation by building up alternate layers of fabric and impregnating medium, superposing a layer of high density polyethylene having beneath it a bonding layer or coating, and curing the whole in a press at elevated temperature.
