[Also in Division B8] Conveyer belts or belting comprise two plies 23, 24 of open-mesh nylon or other polyamide fabric embedded in a non-combustible vulcanised elastomer 22 the spacing of the plies being at least equal to the thickness of the combined plies, and the elastomer being bonded to the plies and penetrating the open-meshes thereof. Outer coating layers 24, 25, and edge layers (not shown) of the same elastomer material are provided. The elastomer composition preferably comprises polyvinyl chloride, butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer, non-inflammable (e.g. chlorinated) plasticizer, non-inflammable filler, and vulcanizing and stabilizing ingredients. The belting is preferably made by calendering one side of each nylon fabric ply with half the total thickness of elastomer, assembling the plies, coated sides inwards, and hot pressing, the outer layers then being applied and the whole vulcanized in a press. To form an endless belt the free ends of the belting material are spliced by removing the inner and outer elastometer layers 22, 25, 26, from one end for a suitable distance, pressing the plies together to form a tongue, removing the inner material 19 from the other end for the same distance, inserting the tongue in the gap so formed, after coating the surfaces with a solvent such as trichlorethylene or with a solution therein of unvulcanized elastomer, and hot-pressing the joint.
